Reading the list

Free includes open source. Free + paid means a usable free version with a paid upgrade, or free for personal use and paid for work. One-time is a licence you buy once; Subscription is a recurring payment.

Prices drift. They are the headline tier in US dollars unless the vendor only quotes another currency, and exclude tax and regional pricing. Check the vendor's site (the app name links to it) before buying.

Looking for the other OS? See Windows Software.

Instructions

A short list of mac software people actually install — what each one is for, what it costs, whether there is a trial, and what to use instead.

  1. Type in the search box to match an app name, a job (screenshot, zip, diff) or a price word (lifetime, /mo).
  2. Use the price buttons — Free, Free + paid, One-time, Subscription, Has trial — to narrow by how you want to pay.
  3. Use the category buttons to see every app for one job side by side.
  4. Click a blue alternative to search for it; grey ones are not in this list. The app name opens the vendor's site.

Tips

  • Many Mac utilities are sold both direct and through Setapp (one subscription for 200+ apps). If you want three or more of the paid ones, Setapp can work out cheaper.
  • Before buying a screenshot tool, try the built-in ⌘⇧5 — it covers region, window and screen recording without anything installed.
  • Searching an app's name also lists the apps that name it as an alternative, so one search gives you the whole shortlist.
  • Your search text and filters are kept in local storage on this device only — nothing about this page is sent anywhere.
  • Hit Example and click the search box to look up screenshot.
