Word Count

Paste or type text and every count updates as you go — words, characters, lines, sentences, paragraphs, bytes and reading time. Select part of the text to count just that. Nothing leaves your browser.

Instructions

Counts characters, words, lines and more for whatever you paste in. Everything runs in your browser — the text is never sent anywhere, and it is kept in this browser's local storage so it survives a reload.

  1. Paste or type your text into the box (or hit Paste to take it from the clipboard).
  2. Read the four headline counts: words, characters, characters without spaces, and lines.
  3. Select part of the text to get a Selection count for just that passage.
  4. Use Copy above the smaller cards to put the whole summary on your clipboard.

Tips

  • Words are whitespace-separated runs, so Alice,42 counts as one — the same way an editor counts. Chinese and Japanese are not spaced, so use CJK characters for those instead. In the word list each CJK character is its own entry, and Hide 1–2 letter words leaves them alone.
  • Characters counts UTF-16 code units, which is what a maxlength attribute or a “max 280 characters” limit usually enforces. An emoji costs two there but one under Graphemes.
  • A trailing newline does not open a new line, so a\nb and a\nb\n are both 2 lines. Paragraphs are blocks separated by a blank line.
  • Sentences split on . ! ? … and their full-width forms, so an abbreviation like Dr. reads as a sentence break.
  • Typing in the box always produces LF line endings; CRLF only survives if it arrived via Paste.
  • Hit Example, then click Load example for English prose or the CJK characters card for Chinese text.
