Icon Libraries

The icon sets worth knowing about, with their stars and sizes — and one search across all of them, so the same idea can be compared as each library drew it. Click an icon to copy its set:name id, or its svg chip for the markup.

Searches icon names and keywords through Iconify. Results are grouped by library, most relevant first.

Loading stars, downloads and icon counts…

Font Awesome

solid · regular · brands

Counting…

The set everybody already has. Free is a subset of Pro, so a name found on their site is not always in the free build.

Site
Material Symbols

variable, 3 fills

Counting…

Google's current set: one variable font with weight, fill and grade axes. Replaces Material Icons.

Site

Counting…

Community superset of Google's old set, and still much larger than it. Unrelated to Material Symbols above.

Site
Lucide

outline, 24px stroke

Counting…

Feather's maintained fork, and what shadcn/ui ships with — so it is already in this app's component library.

Site
Heroicons

outline · solid · mini

Counting…

By the Tailwind team. Each size is drawn separately rather than scaled, so mini stays legible at 16px.

Site
Tabler Icons

outline · filled, 24px

Counting…

One of the largest free stroke sets, all at a consistent 2px weight. MIT, no paid tier.

Site
Phosphor

6 weights

Counting…

Thin through to fill in one family, so weight becomes a design knob instead of a set swap.

Site
Bootstrap Icons

solid · outline

Counting…

Bootstrap's own set. Usable standalone as an SVG sprite or a font — it does not need Bootstrap.

Site
Remix Icon

line · fill pairs

Counting…

Every glyph exists as both a line and a fill version, which makes active/inactive states trivial.

Site
Feather

outline, 24px stroke

Counting…

The original minimal stroke set. Effectively unmaintained — start new work on Lucide instead.

Site
Ionicons

outline · filled · sharp

Counting…

Ionic's set, drawn in iOS and Material flavours of the same glyph. Good for cross-platform apps.

Site
Simple Icons

brand marks

Counting…

Brand logos only, each with its official hex colour. CC0, so it is the safe answer for a "logos" row.

Site
Octicons

16px · 24px

Counting…

GitHub's own set. Drawn twice, once per size, so the 16px versions are not shrunk 24px art.

Site
Fluent UI System Icons

regular · filled, 5 sizes

Counting…

Microsoft's set and the biggest count here, because every glyph ships at several sizes.

Site
Carbon

16/20/24/32px

Counting…

IBM's design system set, also drawn per size. Lives in the Carbon monorepo, so the stars are the whole system's.

Site
Iconoir

outline, 24px stroke

Counting…

Large hand-drawn stroke set with no dependencies. A less ubiquitous alternative to Lucide.

Site
Radix Icons

15px, pixel-snapped

Counting…

Small and deliberately limited, drawn on a 15px grid for dense UI. Pairs with Radix primitives.

Site
Boxicons

regular · solid · logos

Counting…

General UI set with a logo family alongside it, so one dependency covers both.

Site
Eva Icons

outline · fill

Counting…

Small, tidy outline/fill pairs. The web build ships CSS animation presets for them.

Site
react-icons

aggregator

Wraps other libraries

Bundles ~30 of the sets above as React components, tree-shaken per import. It is what this app itself uses.

Iconify

aggregator

Wraps other libraries

Over 200 sets behind one API and one component, loaded on demand. The search on this page is Iconify's.

Using what you copied

The id is Iconify's, and it is what every Iconify component wants: <Icon icon="mdi:home" />. One dependency, any set, loaded on demand.

This app uses react-icons instead, where the set is the import path and the name is camel-cased: import { LuHouse } from "react-icons/lu". The svg chip is the third option — paste the markup and depend on nothing.

Licences differ and matter for brand marks in particular: Simple Icons is CC0, Font Awesome's free tier is CC BY 4.0 with attribution, and a logo being in a set is not permission from its owner to use it.

Instructions

A shortlist of the icon sets in general use, and one search across all of them at once — for picking a library, or for finding the glyph that already exists somewhere.

  1. Type what the icon is — arrow, trash, github. Results come back grouped by library.
  2. Tick the libraries to search under the box — any combination of them, which is how two or three candidate sets get compared side by side. All and None set the lot.
  3. Click an icon to copy its id (mdi:home), or its svg chip to copy the markup.
  4. Below, sort the libraries by stars, icon count or name; each card copies its npm i line and links to the set, the repo (with its ★ stars) and the npm package (with its weekly downloads), and says how active the repo is — Active, or how long since the last commit, e.g. 1 yr no commit.

Tips

  • Stars, downloads and icon counts are cached for hours and read from GitHub, npm and Iconify — treat them as a sense of scale, not a live figure. When GitHub's unauthenticated hourly limit is hit, some cards show a dash instead.
  • Plain words search better than compound ones: bin finds more than delete-forever. The per-library site linked on each card has filters and tags this page does not.
  • Ticking a library covers its style variants — Font Awesome means solid, regular and brands, which is where the logos live. The number beside each name is how many icons that adds up to; hover it for the exact figure and the breakdown by collection.
  • Every Iconify set reaches past the list into all 200+ sets, and ignores the ticks while it is on. It is the answer when a glyph is nowhere on the list — but relevance there is name-first, so the results lean obscure.
  • The search covers all of Iconify, so results include sets that are not on the list below. The list is the shortlist worth adopting; the search is for finding a glyph.
  • Mixing sets in one interface is usually a mistake — stroke weights and optical sizes will not agree. Pick one, and reach for Simple Icons only for brand marks.
  • Hit Example and click the search box to run a sample search across the libraries listed below.
